As a result of the memorandum of understanding signed between the Frankfurter Buchmesse and the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities for Italy’s participation as a guest of honour country at the German pageant in 2023, the “Launch of Italy as a Guest of honour at the Book Fair of Frankfurt in 2023” will take place at Tempo di Libri.
During this meeting, planned on Monday the 12th of March at 12.30 at the Caffè letterario of Tempo di Libri and chaired by Ricardo Franco Levi, President of the AIE, Jürgen Boos, director of the Buchmesse and Simone Bühler responsible for the presence of the guest of honour, will discuss with a public of publishers and representatives of the institutions the meaning of the presence as a protagonist during the event par eccellence of the publishing industry at a global level.
This will be the occasion for outlining the necessary steps for building a path that will enable the Italian publishing business to exhibit at an international level in 2023 the quality and the variety of the own publishing production and to have a positive impact on the international relations in terms of exchange of rights, translations and cooperation.
Internationalisation is a keyword for Tempo di Libri 2018; in order to strengthen the cross-borders dimension of the book fair, Tempo di Libri has joined ALDUS, the European Book Fair network that today includes 16 European Book Fairs in 13 countries providing book professionals an inspiring environment for growing their careers internationally.

The close links between the Italian Publishers Association (AIE) and the Frankfurter Buchmesse set the way for the new collaboration between Tempo di Libri and the international publishing trade fair, the Frankfurter Buchmesse, the world's leading event in the book sector.
As part of Tempo di Libri (fieramilanocity, 8-12 March 2018), the cooperation between the two fairs will bring a delegation of Frankfurt Fellows who took part in the Frankfurter Buchmesse’s international Fellowship programme last October to Milan on 6 and 7 March 2018. The intention is to present Italian publishing in a limited and exclusive context and to contribute to consolidating the international character of Tempo di Libri, also thanks to the excellent results of the first edition of the Milan International Rights Center (MIRC) in 2017.
"Internationality is a founding principle of Tempo di Libri", commented Ricardo Franco Levi, President of AIE. "The collaboration with the Frankfurter Buchmesse, unanimously recognised as the publishing industry's worldwide event par excellence, makes the project particularly prestigious and represents an extraordinary opportunity for the internationalisation of our sector."
“The partnership with Tempo di Libri allows the Frankfurt Fellows to intimately get to know the new Italian book fair in Milan as well as the Italian book market”, says Juergen Boos, Director of the Frankfurter Buchmesse. “For 20 years, the Frankfurt Fellowship Programme has been bringing together publishers, agents and editors from 16 different countries. This has resulted in the development of a vibrant international industry network.”
First launched to mark the 50th anniversary of the Frankfurter Buchmesse in 1998, the Frankfurter Buchmesse Fellowship Programme (www.book-fair.com/fellows) offers information and networking within the international publishing world. Since the programme was launched, 288 participants from 57 countries have benefited from this experience
The Frankfurt Fellowship Programme focuses on information exchange, professional dialogue and the creation of networks between young international publishers. During the programme, the Frankfurt Fellows visit publishing houses and booksellers, learn about international book markets and attend match-making events and dinners.
As part of the cooperation with Tempo di Libri, young editors and rights managers from Intermedio Editores (Colombia), Belleville editions / Hugo & Cie (France), Marsilio (Italy), Iwanami Shoten Publishers (Japan), Harper Collins Holland (Netherlands), Granta & Portobello Books (United Kingdom), Rosman (Russia) and New Direction (United States) will get to know the Italian publishing market more closely and will establish and consolidate relations with Italy through sectorial presentations, visits to publishing houses and bookshops and through participation in MIRC.
The project is made possible thanks to the contribution of Aldus, the European network of Book Fairs – supported by the European Commission's Creative Europe programme – coordinated by AIE and of which Frankfurter Buchmesse is also a partner, ICE – the agency for the internationalisation and promotion abroad of Italian companies, and Fondazione Fiera Milano.
